When Rodrigo Roa Duterte became the 16th President of the Philippines in 2016, it was more than just an election victory—it was a revolution of the people’s will. Tired of traditional politics, millions of Filipinos placed their trust in a man from Davao who promised only one thing: change.
And change did come.
Under Duterte’s leadership, the Philippines saw an era of strong governance and decisive action. His administration launched the Build, Build, Build program, which transformed the country’s infrastructure. Roads, bridges, airports, seaports, railways, and classrooms rose across the nation—concrete proof that promises were being delivered. These projects not only boosted the economy but also gave ordinary Filipinos hope that progress was finally reaching them.
But beyond infrastructure, what endeared Duterte to the people was his heart for the masses. He doubled the pay of soldiers and police officers, cared for the poor through Malasakit Centers, and pushed for universal health care. He made government services more accessible through hotlines like 8888 and one-stop centers for OFWs. For the millions of Filipinos working abroad, his presidency was a reminder that even from thousands of miles away, they had a leader who cared.
Most of all, he brought peace and order. Davao City, once known for crime and chaos, became a model of safety under his leadership—and he sought to extend that same discipline to the entire country. For his supporters, Duterte was more than a president. He was “Tatay Digong”—a father figure who protected his people with both firmness and compassion.
As his term ended in 2022, many Filipinos felt a deep sense of gratitude. For them, Duterte was not just a leader but a symbol of hope, courage, and genuine love for country. His legacy will always remind us that true leadership is about service, action, and results.
Salamat, Tatay Digong, for giving your all to the Filipino people.
