Undeterred by the pouring rain and fresh from celebrating the weeklong 40th Kadayawan Festival, thousands of Davaoeños gathered at the Bazaar Area along the Coastal Road Thursday night, August 22, in a massive show of support for Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, now five months into detention at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Dubbed “Five Months, One Call: Free Duterte Now,” the event drew an emotional crowd who offered prayers and held signs of solidarity and hope, all calling for FPRRD’s release.

Far more than just a peaceful gathering, the evening featured a heartfelt program that blended music, art, and political advocacy. Local and national artists took to the stage, delivering performances that resonated with the cause. Influential personalities and long-time supporters of the former president were also present to amplify the message of unity.

Highlighting the night was a lights and drone show that painted the Davao skyline with messages such as “Free Duterte Now” and “Five Months One Call.” The high-tech display drew applause and tears from the crowd, many of whom raised their phones to capture the moment.

“This is not just about politics; this is about standing by a leader who stood by us,” one attendee said. “We want the world to see how much he is still loved and how we believe in his innocence.”

As supporters prayed for President Duterte’s safety and swift release, emotions ran high among families, youth groups, and longtime allies who filled the Coastal Road in Davao City.

Organizers described the event as a “call from the people, not just of Davao, but of the nation,” urging international authorities to consider the clamor for Tatay Digong’s release amid growing debate over the fairness of the ICC’s proceedings.

As the night ended, chants of “Free Duterte Now!” echoed across the coastal stretch. A resounding message from thousands united under one cause.
